Fuck the Cliché
Thread started by trickmilla at 03.30.09 - 10:56 am

To me "Fuck All Cops" is just as ignorant as (but not limited to) fuck all: whites, gays, blacks, latinos, christians, muslims, cyclists, drivers, etc etc etc.

Cops are people.
That seems to be an indigestible concept to many people.

When I hear people here reciting old NWA lyrics and saying at ALL cops are pigs etc., I just shake my head. Usually i don't bother to respond because the people posting those comments don't seem to have any real thought behind it. Its easier to repeat a cliché that sounds tough, than to actually think and work for solutions that make our culture and our society function better.

Now if you are a honest and consistent (A)narchist who is actively working to overturn authoritarian/ capitalist government and institute a system of community policing. Then you get pass. At least on being against the concept of a police force. But I would hope one would be mature enough to understand that cops are also victims of the authoritarian/ capitalist machine.

This is not 1967 you are not in the Bl;ack Panthers. This is not 1986 you are not a member of NWA (not that they were real gangstas anyway). Its time to grow up.

If you are out there feeling emboldened by being part of the M.O.B. and you are heckling or starting shit with cops YOU are part of the problem. You are a cancer in our culture and you shouldn't be riding bikes with people who are out for F.U.N.

Cops are all individuals. They may have a different culture, they may have made different life decisions than you, but they are all out there doing a dirty job that needs to be done in this society. Some of them actually do it honestly and to the very best of their ability. We should support them, as many of them are just as eager to ferret out the pigs that instill terror and injustice on our communities.

Most of you armchair wankstas are quick to bitch and whine to the cops when you bike gets stolen, some jackass car hits you, or your are being threatened by some criminal. But god damn you do look Fucking TOUGH if you can post the words FUCK THE PIGS under a cutesy pseudonym every time some jackass cop does something lame or unjust to fellow cyclist.

Its time to grow up.
Use that anger and energy not to stereotype or create unnecessary tension with the cops, but to hold them accountable to the standards of our city and our community and US the people that they work for.

These are human beings. They will inevitably make mistakes, even if they re well intentioned. We need to be smarter than them, hold them to account and make them understand that we are not a bunch of ignorant savages, but people who are just trying to make our city and our world better one bike ride at a time. That the overwhelming majority of us want to co-exist safely in this world while doing the most we can to make it more better and more fun.

If I see somebody out there fucking with the cops, hiding behind the MOB my first thought is NARC or DUMMY? either that person is a covert agitator working for some black ops or some fucking dummy that is doing their job for them. good work!

Any cop haters still with me?
Check out this clip from today's Democracy Now! The former chief of police of Seattle talks about legalizing drugs, globalization, and mistakes he made policing the the WTO "battle in seattle" in the 90s.

Is it possible to see this person as an individual who attempted to do a job well while making mistakes and has progressed and evolved over time? Or is that too nuanced to process? Is it easier to just make a judgement about this person based on their former occupation so at not waste important brain cells on the concept that life is complicated and nothing is ever black or white?

WAY TOO COMPLICATED!\
FUCK COPS!

My recent experiences with cops have been refreshingly positive. The cops address me in a cordial and respectful way, I reciprocate. But, just as with cyclists, all it takes is a few poor choices from a few bad apples to ruin the image of the collective whole.

There's a giant discussion that could be had surrounding the acceptable depreciation in public image of law enforcement. Much of being a cop is to exist within a unified, semi-unfavorable position in the public eye in order to stoke the perception of their authority.

Cops have dug such a deep hole for themselves, on a national level, that I doubt if they will ever escape their stigma; or maybe resistance to that stigma will breed new, honest, polite cops in generations to come--who knows. I'd rather just learn from their mistakes, remembering that we're painting a picture, for everyone, of what a Los Angeles cyclist is, so to Trick's point, let's continue to paint a great picture.

Well said, Patrick. Thanks for taking the time to write this out.

I don't see much to be gained by a simplistic and confrontational approach in most situations. To me, a mark of maturity is being able to see life through a variety of angles, even if you don't agree with all of them.

In most instances If you KNOW you're being cited for something, however chicken shit you believe it to be, stay silent, accept the ticket, do whatever you have to do to erase from the officers memory. If you're a loud mouth smart ass the chances are higher the officer will fight you in court rather than blowing it off if they don't really remember you....Officers take notes and if you start telling him he's wrong and asking him why they're harassing cyclists, rapists and murderers out there, etc....you're gonna regret it in court. Once they start writing the citation, they can't stop.

Basically, save the "Fight-The-Power" bullshit for dipshits with a feigned, sense of authority.

Bents,
Just to be clear, I am all about "Fighting the Power" or better yet "Becoming the Power".

I just think that among the myriad things of things that can be done to improve our culture an/or the power structure that we exist in. Judging somebody by their job description, or worse, throwing rocks at the beehive, are just counter-productiv and don't help us.

The cops could do alot for themselves if they abolish the code of silence. I don't even see that on their radar. So it's going to be a real up hill battle improving relations.

Let me ask you this. go to places like Watts, Carson, Florence, Montebello, El Monte. See what the general publics view on cops are. I bet you 90 % of people there hate cops. Sure ask a hipster who lives in echo but probaldly moved there from iowa are some place. But sure as fuck did not go to High school in echo park yeah you will get a much differnt view.
but i guess as you said people living in those areas must not have much thought to back up there claims.

it's easy to generalize that all cops are bad when the only police you see are the ones fucking with you. but that's still a generalization you're making. you can call it what you will, but if you make a decision about what a person is like based on their occupation that's called prejudice

what code of silence are you talking about, allan? there are plenty of police that are cyclists and others who will openly talk trash about their associates.

Thanks Allen.

A code of silence isn't really a cop thing though, its cultural, and there is really nothing an institution can do to really stop it.

I wouldn't expect cops to act any different than solders, politicians, gangstas, or cyclists.

Generally speaking, unless somebody is particularly revolted or alienated by something they are going to be unlikely to speak out against their colleagues. We are no different. If we see somebody corking would we give them up to the cops? Fuck no.

Somebody on that Kush Town ride saw my stuff and the stuff of other people get jacked. Is anybody going to out that person or those people? Probably not. Not unless they feel alienated by the thief or absolutely revolted by what they did. Whistle blowers usually don't step up until they feel like they have nothing to lose.

Or even me.
Am I gonna call the cops and tell them to be at the next Kush Town ride because I got ripped off? No fucking way. Because the bike scene is more important to me than a $50 bike light. That's a code of silence too.

I do not like cops and I say this from first hand experiences with them.

I've meet probably one or two cool cops in my entire life, this was in 6th or 7th grade when one of them bought me and my friends sodas and let us play with his speed radar gun thing.

I don't care how long and thorough anyones letter is that they write out, it will not change the way I feel.

Buckchin,

I'm not fully following you. But I think its a little presumptuous to think that people in the neighborhoods you are talking about "hate the cops".

I've grown up in So Cali my whole life and have met a lot of people form a lot of places and people are way more dynamic than the narrow category you would assign them to.

Some families have some kids that become cops and other kids that end up behind bars how they they feel about "the cops?"

People like to talk a lot of shit. but most people, when they meet somebody have the presence to treat them as an individual person based on their own actions. Its a lot easier to hate an image or a symbol or a stereotype than it is to hate a person.

Patrick, you can't possibly equate a buddy stealing a light with putting someone away for years under some false pretences can you? Damn straight I would rat my follow officer(s) out if that was the case. I guess that's just me. But if I'm sworn to uphold the law, and to protect and serve, that what I plan to do. It comes with the territory. If you don't plan to do it, don't be a police officer.

To the poodle, the code of silence exist and is well in practice. Sure you may find a cop that say what you want, but be serious here. If you truly need to read up on what the code of silence is, here's a couple of links,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rampart_Scandal
POLICE CODE OF SILENCE FACTS REVEALED

Let me know if you need more. And yes, alot of the public have a legitimate reason to not trust the cops.

Of course it exists.
An of course its not the same a ratting out a thief.
But like I said. Its cultural, the higher the stakes of somebody's job, the stronger the bond and the stronger a code of silence there is gonna be.

Its not a cop thing. Its a people thing.

That said, I don't know what measures LAPD or the city has put in to deal with this phenomenon, but cops that obstruct justice or are witness or accessory to a crime should be held accountable and punished just as harshly as the average schmo + a little extra for breaking the public trust.

As to what 'milla just said, I second that. Prejudice is prejudice. It comes in all forms, and that includes one I see pronounced quite often on this site and in person, the "well you didn't grow up here" prejudice. I remember hearing that same prejudice growing up in backwoods NH, I heard it in Florida, I've heard it in the Midwest, I've heard it everywhere. I hear it more often than anywhere in LA; and to that I gotta say, it sends my Bullshit-O-Meter (tm) into the red.
Who gives a shit where you're from, it's an artificial distinction, and just as much a choice as a person's race, sexual orientation, or any of those other things on the PC, Identity Politic list.
People ALWAYS bitch about "those people" from somewhere else. Does that mean the redneck ass cops with nothing to do (who by the time I was mostly gown up happened to be the very same kids who used to beat the shit out of me in grade school) where I grew up were any less violent or boorish than the cops in LA? Not really. Did it do much to improve my outlook on police (or the need for them)? Not really.
Does it mean the air I breathed was all that different? Cleaner maybe, but still the same basic elements floating around.
Does that mean my High School was any less filled with hormone fueled douchebags? Not really.
All being in a different place at a different time in your life means is that you've had a different set of experiences, but you know what, so does the kid you grew up next door to, or your own brother/sister. EVERYONE has had different experiences. Everyone has had to deal with different trials and tribulations in their life, and those personal experiences are what define our lives, just as everyone's brain functions slightly differently, and even how two people react to the same situation differs.
SO, the next time you start going all "where you from, homie?", or start bitching about "transplants" on someone, realize that it's not what matters, it's where they are at that point in time that matters.
If there were no transplants, the only people sitting here right now would be speaking Chumash or Tongva.
Also remember, EVERYONE bitches about people from other places, usually as an excuse to blame problems in the area on that mysterious "other"; it's an easy scapegoat. Change happens, it's a natural part of cultures everywhere, even without an influx of people, neighborhoods change, times change, outlooks change, influences change.

Cops are people who have their own issues and problems and challenges to deal with in their own jobs. I will never say fuck cops because they are doing a job that I personally can never do.

As fair as I'm trying to be and looking at all sides of the coin, my personal experience with officers in LA is that they are COMPLETE ASSHOLES AND DICKS 95%+ of the time. No matter how respectfully I treat them, they are completely rude and treat me like filth, even if I'm not being written up for something and just approaching them to ask for directions. Sad, sad, sad.

I wasn't talking specifically to you, just bringing something up I hear often.
Growing up here, I could see how it makes a person jaded toward police, LA has some of the worst cops in the country, and an official track record to prove it (Rampart, MacArthur Park being only some of the most recent examples), however, this doesn't mean cops anywhere else are that different. If you've ever run into a cop, late night in central Florida you'd see what I mean.
And I was saying the same thing you are, don't judge people, you don't know what they've been through.
It's the same "that person is different I'm going to judge them" thing.
Although I have known one or two decent cops in my lifetime, one of which actually rides with us now and then (she's old school enough to have been a regular at the Badger Song and GOGA) and has corked rides for us with her cruiser, on Hollywood Blvd., I will say that this is the exception rather than the rule. Most interactions with police I have had, around this country, have been fairly negative, and I don't do much to attract attention (well that I get caught for), most of the "official" interactions I've had with cops have been harassment for petty and or made up infractions.

i'm fully aware that police act inappropriately, even abusively. i've seen it very recently. I'm sure there are more than a few mini-ramparts out there today all over LA, and all across America. but that doesnt give you a blank check to call every cop a pig who upholds the "code of silence."

what you're arguing is that every single person who becomes a police officer automatically becomes bad. that's like saying that every white person is bad because some tweeked out cracker stole your bike, or because you heard that white people are stealing bikes.

are you saying that?

that's judging someone prior to knowing them. pre-judice.

many cops are people. (some are reptiles)

many cops are dehumanized people. (or just plain evil reptiles)

many dehumanized cops dehumanize other people. (but not other reptiles)

dehumanized people regain their humanity by fighting for it and letting go their fear of death (hence the manifestations of cliches and generalizations of the oppressed group towards the oppressor group -eg the reptiles).

only then can both the oppressed and oppressor both regain their humanity. (and rid the world of reptiles)

all this doesn't matter because the world will end in 2012.

Sorry but there is a big difference in my mind between judging a person and judging a cop. were talking about people who are known liars stick up for them selfs. and are though of as more importent people in the eyes of judges then you and I. and considering they can ruine your life with one little lie. I put a lot more negitive judgement on them then your average person. maybe it more the system then the actual person. but when it a known fact thet they will never go againt another cop it can be a scarry thought.

@Patrick, yeah human instinct is to "surround the wagons and protect yourselves", but no other employment other than law enforcement, where someone is so directly in charge of someone's life as a police officer. No other employment I can think of where you are sworn to uphold the law and protect the innocent. With that come the responsibility of doing the right thing. I hold someone with that power to a higher standard, than someone that is maybe looking the other way for his boss, while they sell products that are stolen, for example. It's little comfort to hear that you don't seem to.

@poodle, How did you arrive to the conclusion, "what you're arguing is that every single person who becomes a police officer automatically becomes bad."? I haven't a clue how you could have possibly make that conclusion. Did you read the link I posted above? It reads in part,

· 79% said that a law enforcement Code of Silence exists and is fairly common throughout the nation.

· 52% said that the fact a Code of Silence exists doesn’t really bother them.

· 24% said the Code of Silence is more justified when excessive force involves a citizen who’s abusive.

· 46% said they would not tell on another officer for having sex on duty.

· 23% said they wouldn’t tell on another cop for regularly smoking marijuana off duty.

There's more, it's best that you just read it for yourself. Also re-evaluate on what is being posted by me, if you can.

AND I'm a white person, I couldn't even imagine what its like to be someone of color dealing with the cops all the time.

Well, as far as that goes, I myself could count on my fingers the amounts of time I've been hassled by the cops.
In all my life, it's been a total of 8 times, and it was usually because of some stupid shit like parking blocking traffic with a semi, dancing in an underground parking garage and other things of that nature.

The rest of the time, I'm seen as just an average, Joe Schmuck and I'm out of their head for good, and sometimes I'm usually the darkest guy riding in any particular group.

I'm guessing it all depends on how you act, when and where, those sort of things.

I'll say this though, LAPD, LASD, and numerous other municipal departments "down the hill" are far better to approach than San Bernardino Co deputies.
While I was able to get a positive response to questions from numerous personnel in those areas, San Bernardino Sheriff's deputies alienate anyone who isn't one of them.

Also a +1 for your words fuzzbeast.. wherever you go, there you are.

As far as cops go, I have had a very good experience in LA.
I've been driving a motorcycle here for the better part of a decade and been pulled over at least a dozen times. I have convinced officers to let me go with a warning on nearly half of these occasions! Even when I was pulled for drag racing (!) the cop was very polite and respectful.

They have a dirty job to do, and they get dirty sometimes. They're still people underneath, and they always respond favorably to a respectful attitude. IMHO.

Dude, this country has a very sketchy past. Anyone who doesn't know this is fucking blind.

The native americans, slavery, internment camps, Vietnam...

And all kinds of other shady business...

But compared to other places you could be living...it ain't all that bad here.

And I know more than most people, the type of shady shit that goes on in Law Enforcement. But there is one thing that Law Enforcement, Corrections, and every body else on that scene does that I am almost positive you are unwilling to do...and thats deal with the scum of this earth.

I don't think you can fathom the type of demented shit officers see during their career. Not to mention the type of people they send to jail...OVER AND OVER again.

So its no wonder they are not looking forward to CRANK MOB every month. Or they get pissed when some ridazz do stupid shit. The kind of jovial shit you guys get yourselves into is nothing compared to the bigger shit they deal with on almost a daily basis (especially LAPD).

I could shower you with stories that would blow your mind.

Either way, I left that business for a reason...I got sick of it...I got sick of dealing with fucking idiots on a daily basis. Not to mention I saw enough fucked up shit to keep me awake for a couple of years...

I'll leave that job up to someone else.
