Thread Box:
LA is not a 24hr city, why?
Thread started by mechazawa at 07.28.10 - 7:12 am

why and what keeps LA from being 24 hrs? am i not looking hard enough?

reply

Can you clarify, as to what a 24 hour city is ? Cuz, Jack n tha Crack stays open all night and day : what more can we want ?!

LA covers a huge area, whereas a place like new york is only a few square miles, or frisco, etc. If say 70% of the city were to goto sleep at 11, that means 30% remains, but that number spread out over a large area, its not worth it for any small local business to stay open.

k-town runs pretty much all night, but it gets pretty sketch after 3 am.

On a more serious note. There are 24 hour areas, as the afore mentioned ktown, the USC area, and I would assume near UCLA as well. I lived in SF and most things are closed after midnight too. Which is why I'm curious to know your definition of a 24 hour city. I think it is more preception. It seems that more is open in NY and SF because the area of interest is less precise as the USC area is about 10 blocks on Figueroa then you got a ghost town. But some clubs operate until 4 am, you can find 24 hour laundry mats, and like I said, Jack n the Crack is open all night .

Who the fuck wants to go to Jack in the Crack at any hour?

But let's get some perspective here. I have quite a few clear memories of walking or riding around Manhattan and Brooklyn and San Francisco late at night during the times I've visited these places, searching in vain for some amenity or other. Eventually you find something...but in LA you eventually find something.

There's no American city that I know of that is truly 24-hour except maybe Las Vegas, and Las Vegas is the Jack in the Crack of cities.

Los Angeles is as 24 hours as New York is... there are some drug stores open, some convenience stores, some restaurants, some delis, some pizzerias.... it's the same... you just have to know where to look....

never been to the big apple, but i would argue that LA is more "24hr" than SF. i noticed a big difference when i moved from LA to LB, which is "24hr" only on weekends. i'm no travelin' man, and the only truly "24hr" city i know of is LV.

You will have to find those 24 hours dinners...that is the best I can think of. NoHo has a lot of theaters and clubs, usually when they let out everyone (cast, crew, audience, cllubbers) goes to North Hollywood Diner open 24 hours..

And then there's the expensive and overrated Jerry's Famous Deli in Sherman Oaks, both are pretty busy between 2 and 5 a.m. after clubs let out.

in the 90s I was sure we were heading there.
Since the economy crash(es) of the 2000's a bunch of businesses cut back 24 hour status.

Of course our crappy puritanical 2am bar calls in CA don't help either.

We will become 24 hours when the city is so dense that people need to do stuff at night because it is simply more efficient.

While I think LA is a 24hr city due to it having lots of 24hr restaurants, shops as well as colleges and lots of people working late, the perception of "24hr cities" is warped by NY and other world cites.

NYC has its 24hr perception (despite most bars also closing around 2) not only because its is super dense, but also because it is a regional transit hub in a way LA is not and might never be. With a 24 hour subway, the Port Authority bus terminal, and NJ Tranit/Penn Station as well as the city sitting in between all the large northeast cities/areas/economies (DC, Philly, Jersey, Boston), there are always people coming and going.

I think the over saturation of NYC in the media also plays a part in our perception of what L.A "lacks," even though its easy to find things open 24hrs here.

Because while everyone in LA retreats to their little mcmansion to watch TV on their 67" plasma at 6pm, people in other cities are actually out and about at night. LA is fucking dead except for a couple areas.

This may be true, although you forgot to make the obligatory references to SUVs and fast food. But, as I said, if you go to these "other cities" you will often find that a few streets or neighborhoods are lively all night long while the rest of the city is pretty much dead--just like LA. The key difference being that because the other cities tend to be denser, the lively streets or neighborhoods appear to make up a greater portion of the city as a whole

Lucy's Laundromat is 24 hrs.

You can get crystal meth there, beat up, vending machines, arcade games or even sharpen your intellect while you contemplate why there is a 3 year old running around in a diaper at 1am.... and you get to wash your clothes at the same time.

Now really... what more do you need?

We are in diar need of 24 hour coffee shops. The only coffee shop I find open late at night (til 3am) is Cacao and I really don't like lounging there because it's usually packed and there are seldom available tables/chairs.

and the subway runs 24 hrs. maybe in the near future, if LA (doubt it) expands its metro transportation, the trains will run 24/7.
