Thread Box:
The Passage of a Few People Through a Rather Brief Moment in Time: Once More with Feeling
Thread started by theroyalacademy at 01.27.11 - 2:13 pm

One or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.

It's a bike ride.
Started by user nathansnider and user theroyalacademy.

It meets every Wednesday at 8:30pm
at California Donuts #21.
We ride at 9pm.
We'll endeavor to return before the last red line trains (around midnight).

This is the new thread for it.
Please do not post to the old thread any more, as that could be become confusing.
This is the new thread for it.
Thank you.

Lots of fail tonight (sorry we lost you, Michelle and Max; glad you got back okay), but it still turned out pretty fun. Too bad the park ranger made us skip the much more interesting way we were going to leave the park (we would've actually been outta there much quicker too!).

Anyway, this is what ended up transpiring.

Here is information on:
Monkey Island
the old LA zoo
Selig Zoo and its statues

Oh, and I just looked again and apparently the ostrich and alligator farms were just down the street from Selig Zoo, across Mission from Eastlake (now Lincoln) Park. You can find information on those (and Indian Village) on that lincolnheightsla site.

after SS1 all i managed to do at work was have breakfast and stare at a screen hoping some work would get done. Then somehow managed to ride with Tren Way and see FUNDERSTORM. This year i was fine until i saw this and thought it was Wednesday and freaked out momentarily. Anyway, missing Passage tomorrow to go watch a band that will NOT perform this song.

I have not recovered from this song. I hear it constantly and involuntarily. It has been burned deep into my head. It makes me laugh, it also disturbs. Mostly disturbs, because I don't know if time itself will be enough to recover from it.

Well, it started as sheer laziness but turned into a proper theme. Here's the route. Nathan asked if it looked like a saxophone and I said it did not. But, now that I look at it again, I will upgrade that to an emphatic "MAYBE?" (like a saxophone that has been run over by a truck?). Okay, yeah, I know it's a stretch; I was just happy to have found three George Michael sites.

Thanks to everyone for coming out!

Didn't want to post last week's route until after Friday (for obvious reasons). Almost forgot to do it altogether. Speaking of forgetting, I tried to reconstruct our route to and from Hollenbeck as best as possible, but I was just making up the route as I went along and, as we know, my memory is not so great.

Anyway, here it is.

I also got a wicked flat, 2-inch nail through the tread and out the sidewall!

Gotta break my promise to start coming out regularly again until I get the shifter fixed... dollar bill seems to be holding the tire together well enough.

Yeah, that happened to me. Any shop would have a cable. Super easy to buy one and then re-thread the cable yourself (10 min. tops). All you'll need is a cable cutter to shorten the length once you install the cable. That will get it ride-able

A shifter cable is easy to replace, but I would suggest taking it to the kitchen or a shop if you're not keen on doing it yourself. Replacing the cable is easy enough but you'll likely have to fine tune the shifting to get it precise.

As for the tire, a boot (dollar bill or snack bar wrapper) will get you home, but I'd be hesitant to continue riding it. Chances are, it will hold up fine, but it could well suddenly explode under load since the casing is likely compromised (especially on the sidewall). I've gotten similar damage to three of my tires and all three were rideable afterward but I ended up retiring 2 of the 3 just to be safe. It sucks especially if the tires were new-ish but if you keep riding it you'll constantly think and worry about it, plus if it does blow out on a 40mph descent you're not going to be happy.

Went to the Bike Kitchen tonight and got a cable and new housing (housing got lost in transit somehow). I was able to do the whole job myself!! Beaming with pride, even got the shifting down mostly on my own.

But didn't get out until after the ride started. :[

Next week. :]

tfunk:
You're right, I don't want to be thinking and worrying about it. I will get a new tire. These were cheap and they're old, anyway.

Well, I think this is a matter of semantics a bit, in that it is not part of the dam in the strict sense of holding water back, but it is part of the dam inasmuch as being necessary to control the flow of water (and being all one big, connected structure).

I think it is called a "spillway." Yes, basically an overflow, it directs high water flows to the side, away from the center of the dam, to relieve pressure on it.

(Based on my intuition and a quick Google search, I am 95% sure the information above is correct. But I am definitely no hydrologic engineer.)

Yes, those are just approximations. You can see the actual curvature on the city's GIS site (if you zoom in closer than 1:10,000), but I am both lazy and secretive, so I just used the streets as a guide wherever I could.

I got home with every intention of going out to look for the phone, but then I lost my nerve, and the idea of riding up the slip-n-slide three times in as many days sort of lost its charm. My mistake, I think, was taking off my boots while I made coffee. Going back out would have required putting those boots back on, which simply was not going to happen.

I think it was in Sun Tzu's lesser known treatise The Art of Folly where he said "If you really want to carry through with a terrible idea, you have to just go for it without hesitation or any time to think it over." Words to heed.

Anyway, I'll probably go searching with Al tomorrow instead. Despite everyone's doubts, I think it'll be easy to find.

Thanks to everyone who came out for #100, and extra special thanks to Peter and Jackie for bringing the fifth element for us out there in the wilderness!

I think that standing out there in the narrows surrounded by those weird hummocks and watching the donuts fry up was the point where the ride fully crossed the line into "epic" territory - absurdly memorable; memorably absurd. May it set the standard for rides to come.

I'm a big fan of expanding geographical definitions. For example, one could expand one's definition of "the Valley" to allow for multiple referents, such that all possible modifiers (e.g. Central, Shenandoah, San Fernando and Uncanny) are implied simultaneously. I think this is the perfect strategy for avoiding confusion, as it ensures that all instances of the word refer to the same composite geographical/notional location. N'est-ce pas?

But seriously, even though I don't think I talked to Vernon on the ride, I get the impression that he meant the other Valley - you know, the one that the rest of California means when they say "the Valley?" Or maybe not.

Either way, The Passage Ride welcomes residents of all Valleys, canny or otherwise.

I mean this also in the nicest possible way... having lived there for 5 long years... and just on the other side of the hill from the valley for the other portion of my life... The Valley is just simply not part of LA... it should have seceded when it had the chance. LA should break up into smaller and smaller segments really. Local govt is where it's at.

Damn that sucks. I wouldn't be surprised if a disproportionate number of pedestrian/cyclist/animal accidents vs car happen with PT cruisers. My mom used to have one, and the A pillars are enormous, making for visibility gaps between the windshield and side windows. Big traditional blind spots as well. All around a shitty car, and even more so now that one has hit you.

I can attest to the crappiness of the PT Cruiser. The rental place gave me one on two occasions, the second time after I specifically said I wanted anything but a PT Cruiser, but it was all they had available (I wonder why).

Sucks you got hit, man, hope you're okay. Good way to score some painkillers, though.

Hope everyone is feeling all transcendent after tonight's ride. Here's where we went:

Here's Wilburn Burchette's entry on Discogs. Not too much information there, but if you click through to the detailed view of some of the cover art, there is some great text on the backs of most albums.

And if you search like so, you can find several of his albums out there in the bloggyspheres. My favorite is Psychic Meditation Music -- two side-long, extremely ambient pieces.

I would probably call it a 2: average... but average for us. Not ridiculously hard, but not "easy."

The route is VERY short (one of our shortest ever), but does indeed have rather a lot of hills, all of the very steep (but short) variety. And A LOT of stairs. It could be hard on ye legs, I guess. But probably not hard on your soul, like I sometimes like to do (e.g. Loma Vista).

...For the record, here's how I tend to break it down (Nathan might disagree):

1 donut = short and easy and likely educational; bring your friends
2 donuts = average: slightly challenging
2.5 donuts = slightly challenging and probably long; it's "an adventure"
3 donuts = "Why do they hate me?"
4 donnever= less a ride than a buffet

That was so cool of the Police Academy to give us an unscheduled, middle-of-the-night tour. That's the kind of stuff you can't plan! Hope you all had as much fun seeing that as I did.

What you can plan is a route without hills. I, however, did the opposite. Nathan, I also totally remembered the originally planned mileage wrong. It was closer to thirty miles, not 25. So, with a few miles shaved off, we ended up around your guess at 27 and change. I guess by now I too should know that I am a liar.
