They have great beer and shows and activities as well as the short parade ride at the start of the event. Let's show these guys that LA is a Bike Town Party Central !

Try to bring your freak bike if you got one. I've been to a couple of these and they are always good fun.

Please take mass transit to the party.

Hmmm. Isn't that a violation of the Tour de Fat's 1st commandment?:

1. Put no means of transport before thy bike: Come by bike because not only are bikes fun, but they help stave off some of our most wicked ills: Traffic, laziness, and pollution. Tour de Fat has a solution: ride this day, every day, and definitely when Tour de Fat heads your way.

Actually, I'm more interested in how they'll apply the 10th commandment:

10. Thou shalt not steal thy neighbors' bike: Don't even think of leaving with a bike that doesn't belong to you. Modern-day horse thieves will be dealt with by angry mob, pitchforks, and torches.

Do they offer valet? A U-lock village? Their website doesn't say.

the tour de fat I attended has a gate surrounding the stages and such, which served as bike parking (i.e. to lock your bike), and they also had some weird artsy installations for locking up a bike.

It's a bike event, it'd be dumb if you couldn't bring your bike in with you.

Yeah, i felt the same when I couldn't bring my bike in the theater at the Bicycle Film Festival. So dumb, so dumb, you are really dumb.

not even 20 posts in and we already have a complaint about Tour de Fat.

I thought lacbc was doing some valet for this, but it usually means lock up to their ponies. So bring a lock either way or just drive you car through the main gate and park it next to the beer tent.

You are unable to differentiate between a movie theater and a park?

I bet this is LA's fault and not TdF's fault. Either way I'm skeptical of a bike event taking place in an open space (such as a park) that doesn't allow you to enter with your bike.

went to the san fran tour de fat last month and they had a shit load of bike racks that they brought in a big rig with them and the local sfbc had valet that was awesome - maybe labc will do the same- but no you can not take your bike into the event- by the way alot of people were pissed because they were not allowing kids to enter.

there was uproar about the kids not being allowed - I was interviewed by SF weekly and they took pictures of my bike and the lady said she would email me a link to the story- when I went to check it out it was a full length story about how it was billed as a family friendly event and after hundreds of familys biked clear across town with there kids they were turned away at the gates- really sucked, There were some upset parents standing outside watching the performances.

Regarding parking, let's use our imagination.

Pic 1: Can you see the gate in the pic (maybe it's hard from outerspace)? The gate surrounds the stages and such. Most likely you can lock your bike on portions of that gate. And there are are other options in most cases.

TDR gate

Pic 2: See all the bikes people brought to the event? Dont forget.

ex.TDFoarking

Pic 3: See that diverse crowd of people of watching the band play?

tdfpeople

Now, imagine have all those bikes inside the area where people are trying to hang out, watch bands, etc. I know in space, there is just all this room to move around and such, but here on Earth we're limited. And Tour de Fat encloses the stages / beer garden, where no bikes are allowed.

And it makes a ton of sense to do so; its so not dumb.

Outside of the gate, there are tents where you'll find CICLE, LACBC, VALLEY BIKERY (hehe), and basically paraphernalia to buy. Outside of the area where TDF quarantines the drunkards, you can walk around with your bike, have your alone time with your bike, etc... Hence, you can take your bike in the park, just not inside the stage areas.

does that help?

What does a $5 beer token get you? One beer? Two? Is it good for all you can drink? Does participation in the Parade need a Parade Token?

Nothing on the Fat Tire web site states specifically that children are allowed. Would any city or state ordinances prevent children from entering the enclosed area?

I plan to attend but I don't think I'll be bringing my kids with me on Metro, too expensive just to find out that we'll have to continue the day somewhere else (Orange Line + Red Line = $6 dollar all day Metro Pass), we might as well continue on to Long Beach and make it a Metro excursion day with our all day metro passes if kids are not allowed.

I can't remember about San Diego. I think they did, but you couldn't get a drinking wrist band unless you had ID. Was like that for sure in PDX. The website currently says all ages allowed! So that means kids ok. ok?

As memory serves me 2$ for one token = 1 beer. I could be wrong. Maybe that was in PDX.

Sorry, I am no help here.

If it helps any I really enjoyed the last two TDF events I went to. Be sure to make it early for the ride. That makes it even better.

If you are disappointed with the event you can kick my ass at Choppercabras next week.

Get there early to get your I.D. bands and token pre-sales, before the Parade!!

Don't be afraid to take the kids in the car. Especially if it is going to save you big money. At the end of the day, you have to pay the bills and put food on the table.
Think of it as a field trip to inspire them to ride bikes. Tour De Fats is basically a big pep rally to inspire you to ride your bikes more if not solely. Combined with much beer drinking with the proceeds going to your local bike advocacy organization. San Diego it was $5 per beer. Don't believe me, listen to Gern he will be working it tomorrow.

There was no problem with kids in San Diego.

If we are all lucky we should be graced by the Traffic from Tennessee. I can only hope!
