I'm pissed it didn't rain.
I bought fenders, jacket, pants and a helmet cover for commuting to my job in the wet, but the job ended. Last night I cycled for 5 hours with all that junk in my pack, waiting, waiting, waiting for rain.
Still waiting to use the gear.
Has any one else ever installed fenders on your bike?
It took me 3 hours and 347 swear words to get them to not rub the tires.
Next time it rains, I gonna stop what I'm doing and go out and ride.

It rained for 5 seconds at Norwalk yesterday.
I'm in New York now where I finally see snow for the first time in decades.

Fender installations always suck.
I agree that drivers are awful in the rain...i don't mind getting wet one bit, but the decreased visibility and increased skidding tendencies of all the texting morons on the road in LA who don't know how to drive in the slightest of rains makes me nervous...

Seattle's a cool city.
Too bad I was never at the Sumner terminal long enough to get on the Sounder and explore that city!!!
One of these days, hopefully, one of these days.

Having biked in Portland (in fact started biking in Portland) and now biking in Los Angeles, here's a couple things:
_ Yes. ephemerae's right — if you don't ride in the rain up north, you don't ride. You're not a rida, you're a dude or a chick with a bike.
_ But you expect it, so you get a bike with fenders, probably wider tires, and you bike more carefully.
_ Here, it blindsides everyone. People might have rain gear, but most people don't have fenders. Which gives you a lovely stripe of muddy water up your ass, to boot.
_ I had 27x1.5" tires in Portland. Now I run 700x23 slicks. The difference in control is significant.
_ When it doesn't rain much, the water that DOES fall gets oilier and therefore more likely to slip you up. There's just more junk collected on the road, and it doesn't get washed off (by rain) as often. So rain here is much slippier to ride in than rain there in the first place.
This is what I tell myself. I slipped yesterday. Minor slip, nothing too bad. I skinned my knee. Got a cookie. Felt better.

Sounds effective enough, but I guess I'll have to stay away from fording flooded roads.
